Empty Cicada 『空蝉』(2014) for clarinet and piano
Empty Cicada 『空蝉』(2014) for clarinet and piano
Empty cicada calls “Utsusemi” in Japanese, which implies persons who exist in the world. Since cicada has a short life after they are born on the ground, it is said to be evoked a sense of mortality and expressed poetically in the Japanese literature. Empty cicada exists there in reality but the inside is missing. It symbolizes something an object evokes. Each kind of cicadas has a different unique sound like an appeal to the world. In this piece, I tried to create a fading beauty with a reverberation of a piano pedal, clarinet’s quarter tones, and “ma”, which is a Japanese time concept. Silence is also an important gesture in my piece. My idea of silence, which I call “colored silence,” also comes from this Japanese aesthetic.
